A creative pathway to well-being

I’m Katie Queenan, an art therapist and practising artist. My own art journey has shown me how powerful creative expression can be in helping us meet parts of ourselves we may not yet have words for, or that we may not yet be fully aware of. Through years of personal art-making and training, I’ve learned how images can reveal what’s happening beneath the surface, our emotions, memories, defences and moments of insight that quietly shape our lives. This understanding is at the heart of how I now work with others.

In my practice, I support children, adolescents and adults as they explore their inner experience through image, symbol and process. Art therapy offers a way to express what might feel difficult to say, to slow down, and to notice what’s emerging with curiosity rather than pressure or self-criticism. You don’t need to be “good at art”; the focus is on expression, safety and finding a pace that feels right for you.

My approach is trauma-informed and person-centred, drawing on neuroscience, psychodynamic thinking and my own lived experience of how creative processes can gently bring unconscious material into awareness. Often, it’s in returning to an image together, pausing with it, reflecting on it, and noticing what shifts can begin to form from that new understanding. Whether we are making sense of emotion, building resilience or navigating change, the creative process can offer insights that are grounding and transformative.

It’s a privilege to walk alongside people in this work, to support them in their own creative language and to hold a space where expression feels safe, honest and fully theirs.
